Love it, I am originally from Labrador and grew up listening and singing this song when I was a child.

I have mostly Scandinavian roots but also some Nova Scotian in me. Not from Newfoundland but have to like it with the Canadian roots on my dads side.

In the lyric "stickem in a barrel" is wrong here It is "stickem in the scupper" Which makes more sense as using a hosepipe (ref: firehose) would generate a lot of water on deck and the scupper is designed to carry water off the ship. LOL.

My high school English teacher in Montreal wrote that song when he was 15. We knew that he had done it, though not that he was so young. After university, I spent a couple of years working in Newfoundland. Bought a car, then returned to Montreal for a visit. When I was at a shopping centre, a random guy called out to me: "How's t,ings down de bay b'y?" Took a minute to realize that he had seen my Nfld. licence plate. I wish I had been able to deliver a response in kind.

I find it strange, because listening to this song, I recently discovered the melody and some of the lyric line is strangely like a song I heard performed by the group, The Longest Johns called "Spanish Ladies".

I actually learned this from Sharon, Lois, and Bram as a kid. It was one of three Newfie songs Bram did (the other two were Jack was Every Inch A Sailor and the Kerrygoo Soiree.)
